Initiative by Pune Forest Department

Pune Forest Division consists of twelve Forest Ranges of Indapur, Daund, Baramati, Pune, Vadgaon Maval, Paud, Shirota, Bhamburda, Bhor, Saswad, Nasarapur, and Velhe. The geographical area of the Division is 1038618.00 Ha. and the forest area within it is 128846.00 Ha. and out of that the reserved forest area is 121229.00 Ha. In India, tropical thorn forests are found in some drier areas of the Deccan Plateau. Grasslands are spread over Eastern part of Pune Forest Division comprising Daund, Saswad, Baramati and Indapur Ranges. Semi-arid savannah landscape harbours unique and threatened faunal diversity. The annual rainfall is less than 70cm. The vegetation is stunted and dominated by Acacia species that rarely reach 6 metres in height. Wild cats such as the common leopard, jungle cat, and rusty-spotted cat, as well as canids such as grey wolf, golden jackal, Indian fox, and striped hyena, live in this ecoregion.

They are important habitats for migratory and resident birds harboring more than 330 species of birds and 24 species of mammals Grasslands include a variety of habitats, from arid and semi-arid areas to more fertile locations. The ecosystem includes both plants and animals that are adapted to life in these unique environments. Grasslands support pastoralist livelihoods, which is a carbon-efficient form of agriculture. Savannah grasslands are key to addressing climate change because they sequester huge amounts of carbon.
